🗺️ From Field to Fork: Starlings Map Their Food Miles

Feb

🌍 Starlings Discover the Journey of Their Food

Starlings Class have had an exciting week diving deeper into our geography topic on Sustainable Living. The children were fascinated to uncover the hidden journeys behind their everyday foods and to learn how the distance our food travels can impact the climate.
Using the atlases, the children applied their maths learning from this week scaling up and down by 100 using known multiplication facts—to calculate approximate food miles for much‑loved items in their lunchboxes. There was a real buzz as they realised just how far some foods travel before reaching Harrogate!

✨ Mrs Pywell shared:

“The children were so enthusiastic about finding out where their food comes from. They loved connecting their maths skills with real‑world geography, and it really helped them see how small choices can make a big difference to our planet.”
This learning links beautifully with our school vision to Love, Learn and Shine learning how to love and care for creation, gaining new knowledge, and shining by making thoughtful, sustainable choices.

💡 Follow‑Up Ideas for Home

Families who want to keep this conversation going might enjoy exploring a few of these activities:
  • Check food packaging together to find out where items were grown or produced.
  • Compare two versions of the same food (e.g., UK apples vs imported apples) and discuss the difference in food miles.
  • Try a ‘low food‑miles meal’ challenge—choose ingredients grown as close to home as possible.
  • Start a windowsill herb garden to explore ultra‑local food production!
  • Watch short videos together about how food reaches our plates.
