As we approach Remembrance Day on 11th November 2025, the St Peter’s school community is coming together in thoughtful preparation to honour those who have served and sacrificed in times of conflict. This year, our preparations are especially meaningful as we continue to remember two of our own former pupils—Donald Simpson Bell and Charles Hull—both recipients of the Victoria Cross for their extraordinary bravery during the First World War. This week we unveiled a brand new display around the plaque that commemorates them both giving children, staff and visitors further insight into their courageous acts.
In the lead-up to this important day, our Year 6 children have stepped up with pride and purpose, taking on the responsibility of selling poppies and remembrance items on behalf of the Royal British Legion. Their dedication and maturity have been truly inspiring, and we are incredibly proud of the way they are helping our school community reflect on the importance of remembrance.
These efforts are a powerful expression of our school vision to Love, Learn, Shine:
- Love is shown in the compassion and respect our pupils have for those who gave their lives for others.
- Learn is reflected in the thoughtful discussions and learning taking place in classrooms about the significance of Remembrance Day and the stories of our local heroes.
- Shine is seen in the leadership of our Year 6 pupils and the way all children are preparing to mark the two-minute silence with dignity and reverence.
Next week, we will gather to observe Remembrance Day at 11.00am on Tuesday 11th November, joining together in a moment of silence and prayer to remember the fallen and reflect on the values of peace, courage and hope.
🎖️ Remembering Our Victoria Cross Heroes
Donald Simpson Bell VC
A former teacher and professional footballer, Donald Bell was the first English professional footballer to enlist in WWI. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery in July 1916, when he single-handedly destroyed a German machine-gun post under heavy fire, saving many lives.
Charles Hull VC
Charles Hull received the Victoria Cross in 1915 for rescuing a wounded comrade under intense enemy fire. His selfless courage continues to inspire us all.
We are honoured to remember these two remarkable individuals who once walked the halls of St Peter’s.
