A former teacher and professional footballer, Donald Bell was the first English professional footballer to enlist in WWI. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery in July 1916, when he single-handedly destroyed a German machine-gun post under heavy fire, saving many lives.
Charles Hull received the Victoria Cross in 1915 for rescuing a wounded comrade under intense enemy fire. His selfless courage continues to inspire us all.
Dear Lord,
As we prepare to mark Remembrance Day,
Help us to remember with love and gratitude those who gave their lives for peace and freedom.
Guide us to live with kindness, courage and hope,
So that we may honour their memory and build a future filled with love.
Amen.
