🛠️ Turning Scrap into Art: Children Shine with Sculptor Mick Kirkby‑Geddes
Metal Sculptor Visit – Mick Kirkby‑Geddes
St Peter’s CE Primary School was thrilled to welcome professional metal sculptor Mick Kirkby‑Geddes for an inspiring day of creativity with the children in Ravens, Eagles, Herons and Starlings.
Mrs Williams first discovered Mick’s work in The Yorkshire Magazine while planning our sculpture unit, and she immediately saw how his playful, imaginative approach—combined with his commitment to using reclaimed materials beautifully complements our school’s sustainable ethos and our vision to Love, Learn, Shine.
Exploring Sculpture Through Reclaimed Materials
Mick, who has been creating full‑time since completing his Fine Art degree at Leeds Polytechnic in 1988, is widely known for transforming scrap and discarded metal into expressive, characterful works of art. Influenced by cartoons, children’s stories and classic TV from the 1970s, his sculptures mix humour and craftsmanship in a way that children connect with instantly.
During the workshops, Mick showed the children how everyday materials can be reimagined into something extraordinary. They explored how metal shapes can be combined to show movement, emotion and personality.
Inspired by the Angel of the North
Taking inspiration from Anthony Gormley’s Angel of the North, the children designed and created their own miniature sculptures. They experimented bravely with:
- shape
- balance
- texture
- composition
At the end of the session, the children proudly set up their creations in a pop‑up gallery. There was a wonderful buzz in the room as they shared their ideas, talked about their designs and celebrated each other’s achievements.
A Day of Love, Learning and Shining
This hands‑on experience brought our art curriculum vividly to life. The children showed imagination, teamwork and resilience—living out our St Peter’s vision to Love, Learn, Shine.
We are very grateful to Mick Kirkby‑Geddes for inspiring our young artists and showing them how creativity can flourish from the most unexpected materials. Thank you to all the parents and to FOSP for their contributions to funding this experience.
