🌟 Straight to the Point: Herons Explore the Science of LightπŸ•΅οΈ

This week, the children in Herons class have been busy exploring one of the fascinating properties of light – how it travels. Through hands-on investigation, they discovered that light moves in straight lines.

Using torches and carefully aligned pieces of card, the children observed that when the holes in the cards were perfectly lined up, the light from the torch could pass through and shine on the final card. This simple but powerful experiment showed them that light travels directly from its source to an object in a straight line.
The children also tested what happens when the holes were misaligned. They quickly realised that the light could not bend around the cards – reinforcing the idea that light does not curve or twist, but moves in straight paths.

Miss Emsley, Herons class teacher, said:
β€œThe children were so engaged and curious during this investigation. They loved seeing science in action and asking questions about how light works in everyday life. It was wonderful to see their excitement and teamwork shining through!”

This investigation was a brilliant example of our school vision in action: Love, Learn, Shine. The children showed curiosity and collaboration as they learned something new about the world around them, and their enthusiasm truly shone!

Follow-Up for Parents

Why not continue the learning at home? Here are some great questions to ask your child:
  • Can you explain why light travels in straight lines?
  • What happened when the holes in the cards were not lined up?
  • Where do we see light travelling in straight lines in everyday life?
  • Why do shadows form when something blocks the light?
