🌼 Doubling in Early Years: Learning Through Play, Indoors and Out

Our Early Years children have been busy exploring doubling this week through rich indoor and outdoor continuous provision. The environment has been carefully set up so children can practise skills, apply new knowledge, and make connections across a range of playful experiences — truly living out our school vision to Love, Learn, Shine.
Throughout the provision, children have been encouraged to notice “the same again,” use real objects to create doubled sets, and explain their thinking. This has led to some wonderful mathematical talk, problem‑solving, and confident early reasoning.

Miss Ward shared:
“The children have amazed us with how quickly they’ve begun to use the language of doubling in their play. It’s been lovely hearing them explain their ideas to friends.”
Mrs Renton added:
“Continuous provision gives children the freedom to practise and revisit their learning in meaningful ways. Doubling with natural materials outdoors was a huge hit!”
From doubling spots on ladybirds to matching sets of blocks, the children have embraced every opportunity to shine as little mathematicians.

🏡 Follow‑Up at Home

If you’d like to keep the learning going, BBC Bitesize has a helpful section on early maths, including doubling:

Here are some simple, playful activities you can do together:

✨ Try These Activities

  • Double It Snack Time
Lay out 2 grapes or 3 crackers and ask: “If we double this, how many will we have?” Eat them afterwards!
  • Nature Doubles
On a walk, collect sticks, stones or petals. Make a small set and invite your child to find “the same again.”
  • Toy Sorting Doubles
Use cars, teddies, Lego or anything you have at home. Start with a small number and say: “Can we make double?”

đź’¬ Questions to Ask

  • “How do you know it’s double?”
  • “Can you show me the same again?”
  • “What happens when we double a number?”
  • “Is your answer bigger or smaller? Why?”
These little conversations build big understanding helping your child to Love learning, Learn with enthusiasm, and Shine brightly.
