🎩 Little Tour Guides Take Over Year 1 As Children Explore London.

This week in Kingfishers, our Year 1 children have been on an exciting journey to London – without leaving the classroom! As part of our Geography and Speaking & Listening curriculum, the children explored some of the capital’s most famous landmarks, including the London Eye, Big Ben, and the Tower of London. These activities helped them develop their understanding of the United Kingdom and practise clear, confident communication skills.
To bring their learning to life, they dressed up and became tour guides for the morning, confidently showing their friends around these iconic sights. It was wonderful to see their enthusiasm and creativity shining through as they shared facts and stories about each landmark.
Class Teacher Miss Ratcliffe said:
“The children loved stepping into the role of tour guides! It was fantastic to see them using their voices clearly and sharing what they had learned with such confidence. They really brought London to life in our classroom!”

Ideas to Follow Up at Home

  • Create a London Landmark Collage: Use magazines or print pictures of famous sights and make a colourful poster.
  • Build Big Ben: Try making a model using Lego or recycled materials.
  • Virtual Tour: Explore London together online – the Tower of London and Buckingham Palace have great virtual tours!

Questions to Ask Your Child

  • Which London landmark was your favourite and why?
  • What did you learn about Big Ben or the Tower of London?
  • If you could visit London for real, what would you like to see first?

Fun Fact to Share

Did you know? Big Ben isn’t actually the name of the clock tower – it’s the nickname for the Great Bell inside! The tower itself is called the Elizabeth Tower.

This activity really reflects our school vision of Love, Learn, Shine – the children showed a love of learning, developed new knowledge, and shone with confidence as they shared their ideas.
It also links to our commitment to British Values, as the children learned about our capital city and its heritage, helping them appreciate the culture and history that shape life in modern Britain.
