Starlings Explore Sculpture Inspired by Barbara Hepworth

Starlings Year 4 class have been diving into the world of sculpture this week, taking inspiration from the incredible work of local artist Barbara Hepworth. To bring their learning to life, the children worked with bars of soap to create their very own carved masterpieces!
This hands-on task really stretched their creative thinking and practical skills. The soap proved surprisingly tricky to work with – sometimes slippery, sometimes brittle – and the children quickly discovered how delicate they needed to be when carving away the finer details. There were moments when pieces snapped, crumbled or bent the wrong way… but what impressed us most was the children’s resilience and perseverance.
In true St Peter’s style, the children showed our school vision of Love, Learn, Shine throughout the afternoon:
  • Love – supporting one another when sculptures didn’t quite go to plan
  • Learn – experimenting with new tools and techniques
  • Shine – producing stunning final sculptures they can feel proud of
The children have taken their creations home, and we’re excited to hear…
Will they remain treasured objets d’art, or become the most artistic soaps Starlings have ever washed with?

“The children showed such determination today. They embraced the challenge, encouraged one another, and created the most wonderful, unique sculptures. We were incredibly proud of their creativity.”

Mrs Pywell, Class Teacher

We’re pleased to share some examples of their wonderful work in the photos below.
