Advent at St Peter’s – Preparing Hearts for Christmas 🎄

Advent has begun at St Peter’s, and we are thrilled to share this special season with our children and families. Advent is a time of waiting and preparing for the celebration of Jesus’ birth  a season filled with hope, peace, joy, and love.
This year, every class has two Advent calendars:
  • A Fairtrade chocolate calendar, reminding us of fairness and the real story of Christmas.
  • A traditional picture calendar with Bethlehem scenes, helping children connect with the nativity story.
As a church school, our vision of Love, Learn, Shine guides us to give children the knowledge and understanding they need to make informed choices about their own thoughts and beliefs. Advent is a wonderful opportunity to explore these values together. Mr Griffiths enjoyed visiting classes today to deliver the calendars.

What is Advent?

Advent begins four Sundays before Christmas and marks the start of the Christian year.
The word Advent means “coming” – Christians use this time to prepare for the coming of Jesus.
Many churches use an Advent wreath with four candles, each representing hope, peace, joy, and love.

Why Do We Celebrate Advent?

Advent helps us prepare our hearts and think about Jesus.
It reminds us that Christmas is not just about presents and decorations—it’s about remembering the Christmas story.

How Do People Celebrate Advent?

  • Advent wreath: A circle of green leaves with four candles, lit each Sunday before Christmas.
  • Advent calendars: Little doors or windows opened daily to count down to Christmas.
  • Special prayers and songs: People go to church and sing songs about waiting for Jesus.

What Does Advent Teach Us?

  • To be patient.
  • To be kind and loving.
  • To get ready for something very special—the birth of Jesus.

Questions for Families to Explore at Home

  • What does waiting feel like? Why is it important?
  • How can we show kindness and compassion during Advent?
  • What does Christmas mean to you and your family?
  • Why do Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus?

Acts of Compassion Advent Calendar

We are linking Advent to our Collective Worship theme of Compassion. Each day, children can complete a simple act of kindness.
Examples include:
âś” Help someone tidy up.
âś” Write a thank-you note.
âś” Donate to the food bank.
âś” Say something kind to someone who looks sad.

Our Advent Prayer

Dear God,
Thank you for this season of Advent.
Help us to wait with hope and joy,
to share kindness and compassion with others,
and to remember the true meaning of Christmas.
Amen.
