🌟 Exploring Compassion at St Peter’s CE Primary School
💛
At St Peter’s, our school vision—Love, Learn, Shine—guides everything we do. This half term, we’re embracing a theme that lies at the very heart of our vision: Compassion.
Rooted in the powerful words from Colossians 3:12, “Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience,” our collective worship will help children understand that compassion is more than just a feeling—it’s a way of living, loving, and caring for others.
💛 What Is Compassion?
To support conversations at home, here are the definitions we’ll be helping children to learn and show throughout the half term:
-
Compassion means feeling care and concern for someone who is sad, hurt or struggling, and wanting to help them.
For example, if a friend is upset, compassion is when you notice and want to comfort them.
-
Compassionate describes someone who shows kindness and tries to help others when they are having a hard time.
A compassionate person listens, helps and treats others gently.
We’ll be encouraging children to look out for one another, use kind words, and offer help when someone needs support—whether in the classroom, on the playground, or beyond.
🕯️ Lighting the Way with Compassion
Each week, our worship will explore a different aspect of compassion through Bible stories, drama, reflection, and prayer. Some of the key themes include:
- Noticing a Need – Inspired by Jesus feeding the crowd (Mark 6:34), we’ll reflect on how important it is to be aware of others’ needs, even when we’re busy.
- Being a Good Neighbour – Through the parable of the Good Samaritan, children will learn that everyone in need is our neighbour.
- Putting on the Right Attitude – Imagining clothing ourselves each day with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience—just like putting on our school uniform.
- Having the Courage to Care – The story of Miriam and baby Moses (Exodus 2:1–10) will help us think about how even small acts of bravery and care can change lives.
- Coming to the Rescue – The parable of the Lost Sheep (Luke 15:4–6) reminds us that compassion means going out of our way to help those who are lost, lonely, or in trouble.
🌈 Growing Compassion Across the School
Our approach is tailored to each age group:
-
🐣 Early Years & Key Stage 1:
Children will explore kindness through simple stories and role play, learning how small acts—like sharing a smile—can make a big difference.
-
🧒 Lower Key Stage 2 (Years 3–4):
Pupils will reflect on real-life scenarios and discuss how to respond with empathy and support.
-
👦 Upper Key Stage 2 (Years 5–6):
Older children will explore compassion as courageous action, thinking about how they can be leaders in kindness and make a difference in the wider world.
✨ Shine Worship & Celebrating Compassion
We’ll be recognising and celebrating acts of compassion during our Shine Worship every Friday with children nominated receiving one of our special Shine certificates and sticker.
We warmly encourage families to talk about compassion at home—ask your child what they’ve learned, who they’ve helped, or how they’ve felt when someone showed kindness to them. Together, we can nurture hearts that care, hands that help, and lives that shine.
