❄️ Learning Beyond the Classroom – All Year Round❄️

At St Peter’s, we believe that learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door. Even when the weather turns chilly, our Early Years children love exploring the great outdoors! Wrapped up warm in coats, hats and gloves, they’ve been busy investigating, building, and discovering in our outdoor provision.

Miss Ward shares:
“Children thrive when they have the freedom to explore outside. It sparks curiosity and gives them real-life experiences that make learning meaningful.”

Mrs Renton adds:
“Outdoor learning helps children develop resilience and confidence. They learn to problem-solve, work together and appreciate the world around them – all while having fun!”

Why Outdoor Learning Matters

Outdoor provision offers so many benefits:
  • Physical Development: Running, climbing and balancing strengthen muscles and coordination.
  • Wellbeing: Fresh air and movement boost mood and reduce stress.
  • Language & Communication: Nature inspires rich conversations and new vocabulary.
  • Creativity & Imagination: Sticks become magic wands, leaves turn into treasure – the possibilities are endless!
  • Love of Learning: Children see that learning happens everywhere, not just indoors.

Questions Parents Can Ask at Home

  • What was your favourite thing you discovered outside today?
  • How did you work with your friends outdoors?
  • What did you notice about the weather or the plants?

Ideas for Follow-Up Activities

  • Nature Hunt: Collect leaves, sticks or stones and sort them by size or colour.
  • Weather Watch: Keep a simple chart of sunny, rainy or frosty days.
  • Outdoor Art: Use natural materials to make patterns or pictures.
  • Story Time Outside: Wrap up warm and read a favourite book in the garden.
At St Peter’s, our vision is to Love, Learn, Shine – and outdoor learning is a wonderful way for children to shine as curious, confident learners.
