🧊 Curiosity Sparkles as Children Discover Ice ❄️

This week, Wrens Early Years embraced the chilly weather and discovered the magic of ice in the EYFS garden. The children were captivated by the shiny, slippery surfaces and loved touching and breaking the ice to uncover what was hidden beneath. Their excitement sparked wonderful conversations about how ice feels, why it forms, and what happens when it melts.
This hands-on experience encouraged curiosity, language development, and scientific thinking as the children explored changes in their environment. It was a perfect example of how our school vision – Love, Learn, Shine – comes to life through everyday discoveries.

Mrs Renton shared:
“It was amazing to see the children so engaged. They asked brilliant questions and worked together to investigate what was under the ice. Their sense of wonder was inspiring!”

Miss Ward added:
“The children were fascinated by the textures and changes. Activities like this really help them develop scientific thinking and vocabulary in such a natural way.”

Ideas to Follow Up at Home

  • Ice Play: Freeze small toys in ice cubes and let your child explore how to melt them (warm water, salt, etc.).
  • Weather Watch: Look for frost or ice on windows or in the garden and talk about what you see.
  • Melting Experiment: Put ice in different places (inside, outside, near a radiator) and predict which will melt first.

Questions Parents Can Ask

  • What did the ice feel like when you touched it?
  • Why do you think the ice melted?
  • What was hiding under the ice in the garden?
  • Can you think of other places where ice forms?
