🐇 Edward Tulane’s Adventure Sparks Magical Writing!✏️ Storms, Scarecrows and Storytelling: Children Shine in Creative Writing

This week, our children have been diving into the enchanting world of storytelling, inspired by two incredible tales: The Incredible Journey and The Mouse and His Child. These classics set the stage for a magical writing adventure, but the real spark came from Kate DiCamillo’s much-loved story The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane.

Edward, a blue rabbit, begins his journey as a vain toy who only loves himself. But when he falls overboard during a stormy voyage from New York to London, his life changes forever. From travelling with tramps to comforting a dying child, Edward learns the true meaning of love.

Our children explored this dramatic moment Edward falling into the stormy sea—through powerful descriptive writing, using vivid adjectives, adverbs and adverbial phrases to bring the scene to life. Here are some of the wonderful phrases used,

  • With a sudden lurch, into the raging waves below

  • Without warning, into the depths of the foaming sea

  • With the wind howling fiercely around him

  • In the midst of the furious storm, tumbling helplessly

These phrases helped the children capture the drama and emotion of Edward’s perilous fall.

Questions for Parents to Ask at Home

  • How did Edward feel before and after he fell overboard?
  • Which adjectives and adverbs did you use to describe the storm?
  • What lesson do you think Edward learned on his journey?
  • If you were Edward, what would you miss most about your old life?

Quote from Miss Emsley

“I am so proud of the children’s creativity and imagination. They didn’t just write about a storm—they made us feel the wind, hear the waves, and experience Edward’s emotions. Their writing truly shines!”
