📚 From Page to Press: Starlings Create Brilliant News Reports!

Starlings class have been enjoying diving into the atmospheric and moving story The Last Bear by Hannah Gold. The Last Bear tells the story of April, a compassionate and courageous 12‑year‑old who travels with her scientist father to the Arctic’s Bear Island. Although she’s told that polar bears no longer live there, April stumbles upon a starving, injured bear who desperately needs help. What follows is a powerful friendship and a brave mission to save him. The book shines a light on climate change, hope and the difference a single child can make a wonderful link to our school vision to Love, Learn, Shine.
Inspired by the bravery of the book’s young heroine, April Wood, the children have spent this week becoming journalists themselves writing detailed, factual and truly impressive news reports.
Using the all‑important 5Ws, carefully chosen quotations, journalistic openers and a clear, unbiased tone, the children reported on April’s extraordinary discovery of a lone polar bear on remote Bear Island. The quality of their writing has been exceptional, and we could not be prouder of their determination, creativity and growing confidence as writers. There are definitely some budding journalists among us!

✏️ A word from Mrs Pywell
