Science in Action: Making Ice Cream!

On Thursday, our Eagles and Ravens classes enjoyed a deliciously cool science lesson! The children explored the fascinating concept of changes of state by making their very own ice cream. Using salt, ice cubes, and milk, they discovered how a liquid can transform into a solid—and learned that some changes, like turning milk into ice cream, can be reversible.
This hands-on activity was not only fun but also a brilliant way to bring science to life. It perfectly reflects our school vision of Love, Learn, Shine—children learning through curiosity and creativity, shining with confidence as they apply their knowledge in exciting ways.
Mrs Williams, Eagles Class Teacher, shared:
“The children were absolutely thrilled to see science in action! It was wonderful to watch their excitement as they realised they could make something so tasty while learning about states of matter.”

Follow-Up at Home

Want to keep the learning going? Here are some ideas:
  • Ask your child:
    • What happens when water freezes?
    • Can you think of other examples of reversible changes at home?
    • Why do we add salt to the ice when making ice cream?
  • Try this together:
    • Make a simple ice cream or frozen fruit treat at home and talk about the science behind it.
    • Explore melting and freezing by observing ice cubes in different places around the house.
