🤖 Junk‑Modelling Magic in Year 2 Sparrows

Today in English, our Year 2 Sparrows continued their exciting learning inspired by The Dragon Machine. After exploring the story and its wonderfully imaginative world, the children set to work on designing their very own robot creatures! First, they sketched and planned their inventions, thinking carefully about shapes, features, and what their robot creature might be able to do. Then, using a fantastic selection of junk‑modelling materials, the children got busy bringing their ideas to life.
The results were nothing short of amazing. We now have an incredible collection of robot dinosaurs, aliens, fantastical animals and even robot angels proudly displayed in the classroom. Each creation is completely unique and shows the children’s imagination at its very best. Throughout the session, the children demonstrated outstanding focus and creativity. Even when the construction got a little tricky, they showed brilliant resilience, problem‑solving and support for one another—celebrating each other’s ideas and achievements every step of the way.

💬 A Word from Miss Corrigan

“I am so proud of how creative and determined the children were today. Their imagination shone through in every single design, and it was wonderful to see them help and encourage one another. Their finished robot creatures are fantastic!”
Miss Corrigan, Year 2 Teacher

🏡 Ideas to Continue the Learning at Home

Here are a few simple (and fun!) ways families can build on today’s learning:
  • Create a short story together
Ask your child to describe where their robot creature might live, what it can do, and who it might meet.
  • Name and label their creation
Encourage your child to name their robot and add labels describing its special features.
  • Draw another invention
Children might enjoy sketching a new robot creature, inspired by today’s work.
  • Build something together
Keep a small box of recycling at home for mini junk‑modelling projects. It’s a lovely way to spark creativity and conversation.
