✨ Hands‑On Learning in EYFS: From Baptism to Washing Day💧

Feb

Our EYFS children have enjoyed a wonderful week of practical, joy‑filled learning, exploring both a special Christian celebration and important early fine motor skills. Each activity helped them make meaningful, real‑life connections, reflecting our school vision of Love • Learn • Shine.

✝️ Exploring Baptism Through Role‑Play

As part of their RE learning, the children have been discovering the meaning of baptism and why it is such an important celebration for Christians. To deepen their understanding, they took part in a thoughtful role‑play activity using a baby doll to recreate the steps of a baptism.
The children took turns being parents, godparents and even the priest, gently pouring water over the baby doll’s head and talking about welcoming the baby into the church family. Their empathy, curiosity and sense of belonging shone through beautifully.
Mrs Renton shared:
“It was wonderful to see the children engage so thoughtfully with the baptism role‑play. They showed such care and understanding, and it really helped them appreciate how special this celebration is for many families.”

🧺 Strengthening Skills on Washing Day

In another hands‑on activity, the children enjoyed a “washing day” using our homemade washing line. They scrubbed small pieces of fabric before squeezing out the water using just their hands — a brilliant way to strengthen the muscles needed for early writing and everyday self‑care skills.
Afterwards, they carefully pegged each item onto the washing line, showing impressive concentration, coordination and independence. Their enthusiasm and pride in the task were clear to see.

Both activities beautifully embodied our vision of Love, Learn, Shine:
  • Love — in the care shown to the baby doll and the kindness shown helping each other.
  • Learn — through rich, hands‑on experiences that bring key concepts to life.
  • Shine — in the confidence, curiosity and growing independence on display throughout the week.
