✨ Beam Brilliant! Year 5/6 Eagles Investigate the Magic of Light

🔦 Year 5/6 Eagles Explore the Science of Light

This week, the Year 5/6 Eagles enjoyed a wonderfully hands-on and active science lesson investigating how light travels and changes direction. Children took their learning outdoors first, using tennis balls to represent beams of light. By rolling the balls in straight lines and bouncing them off walls, they explored how light behaves when it meets a surface.
Back inside, the classroom was transformed into a mini laboratory. With the lights dimmed and torches at the ready, the children experimented with mirrors to see how light can be reflected and redirected. Working collaboratively, they then created an impressive mirror maze, carefully positioning mirrors to guide a beam of light onto a chosen target. There was so much problem‑solving, teamwork and excitement in the room!

Mrs Williams was equally delighted, saying:
“It was wonderful to see the children so engaged and curious. Their teamwork and enthusiasm really shone today—what a fantastic example of our school vision in action as they Love, Learn and Shine!”

🏡 Follow‑Up Ideas for Home

To keep the learning glowing, here are some fun and simple activities families can try together:
  • Mirror challenges: Use a small mirror and torch to see if you can bounce a beam of light around a corner.
  • Shadow art: Create shapes or stories using a torch and objects at home.
  • Light maze at home: Build a mini obstacle course using kitchen foil, shiny trays or mirrors to reflect light onto a target.
  • Explore transparency: Test household objects to see which are transparent, translucent or opaque.
